In the U.S., Canada and sometimes the UK, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is usually held at the end of last year. There's a lot in popular culture and is a major event among high school students. High school juniors participate in the prom can call the Junior Prom, while high school students can call the Senior Prom.
